Muhammad Ali is an 18-year-old with a bright spirit and an unwavering determination to experience life to the fullest. Born with TUBB4A-related leukodystrophy, Ali faces significant challenges, including hypertonia, cognitive impairment, global developmental delay, ataxia, dystonia, and sialorrhea. His brain signals are weak and slow, making it difficult for him to walk or speak in sentences. He relies on a communication device to express himself and requires full-time support from his family. Despite these challenges, Ali’s joy and resilience shine through every day.
For years, Ali’s mobility was restricted, making everyday tasks difficult. His legs are stiff and tend to cross, and as he has grown, developing hip malformations have made movement even more challenging. In their previous rental home, Ali’s parents were unable to make modifications to improve accessibility. When the family moved into their own home, his father built a ramp—giving Ali a newfound sense of independence. Being able to move freely, get a glass of water on his own, or follow his siblings into the living room was life-changing. His parents were overwhelmed with emotion, realizing how something so simple could bring their son so much happiness. However, navigating the stairs remained a major barrier, limiting Ali’s freedom within his home.
Ali became a Wish Kid with the Guelph Wish Fund for Children in 2022, and his wish was granted a few months ago: a stairlift that allows him to safely move between floors in his home. "Moving from downstairs to upstairs and backwards was a nightmare for my dad. He is The BEST DAD ever, but with growing age, I could feel his pain," Ali shared. His father had always been there to carry him, but as Ali grew older, it became increasingly difficult.
"This approval has changed my life altogether," Ali expressed with gratitude. "Jessica is the most helpful person who could understand my situation, and approval by her brought a big sigh of relief and comfort for my whole family."
Now, with the stairlift installed, Ali has a new level of independence. "Having my own transport system, without being a burden on my dad’s lap, feels good," he said. This simple change has brought not only comfort and ease but also restored a sense of dignity and autonomy for Ali.
Reflecting on his wish, Ali shared, "I don’t have words to express how grateful I am and how much comfort your grant has given me." His story is a testament to the power of a wish—not just in granting access but in restoring freedom, independence, and joy.
Ali’s journey is a reminder that small changes can make a profound impact, and we are honoured to have been a part of making his wish come true.
